Switchable privacy glass

Remote control privacy glass: smart film for existing glass

With a remote control you operate a matching PDLC system: smart film on suitable existing glass switches electrically between clear and matte. The film scatters light for privacy but does not fully black out. We first check whether your glass, power connection and preferred control suit the system.

What do we mean by glass with a remote control?

Usually this means switchable glass for privacy using PDLC technology, also known as electric privacy glass. The remote control operates a controller that manages the film’s power supply. The exact components and control depend on the chosen system. Searches for “PDLC film” usually refer to this smart film.

Control

A handheld remote, switch or app can change the state, provided that option has been selected for your system.

Understanding privacy

In matte mode, light is scattered. This gives visual screening, not a full blackout or guaranteed opaque seal.

Connect safely

The transformer and controller must match the product. Have the mains connection made by a qualified electrician.

Film on existing glass or new switchable glass?

Smart film is a retrofit solution: the film is applied to the surface of suitable existing glass. In smart glass, the PDLC layer is built into a laminated glass unit. That is a different product, with a different glass build-up and application; it may suit new builds or situations where glass is being replaced.

Which solution can responsibly be used depends on the pane, the environment and the desired finish. Suitability cannot be guaranteed on the basis of a photo or a general rule alone.

Frequently asked questions about remote control privacy glass

Can smart film with a remote control be applied to my existing glass?

PDLC smart film can often be applied to existing flat glass, but not every window is automatically suitable. The glass type and build-up (such as double or laminated glass), dimensions, heat load, film position and finish must be assessed in advance. Send photos and window details for a technical check.

How does remote control privacy glass work?

A remote control operates a receiver or controller that belongs with the transformer and the PDLC film. The film then switches between a clear state and a matte, light-scattering privacy state. Depending on the project, control can be a handheld remote, wall switch or app; check in the quote which control and any receiver are included.

What is needed for the electrical connection?

The film needs a transformer/controller suited to the chosen product and glass area, wiring and a suitable connection. Have the mains connection made by a qualified electrician in line with applicable regulations. Keep electrical connections and controls dry and follow the installation instructions; switch off the power before any work is done.

How much does switchable glass or smart film with a remote control cost?

There is no fixed price that applies to every window. The quote depends on factors such as total area, number of separate glass panes, glass suitability, chosen control, wiring, finish, measuring and any installation. Share your approximate dimensions, photos and preferred control to get a project-specific quote.

Does the matte mode give a full blackout or complete privacy?

No. PDLC film scatters light and looks matte, but it is not a blackout or an opaque wall. Light still passes through, and with backlighting, strong background lighting or a short viewing distance, shapes or silhouettes may be visible. If full blackout or guaranteed opacity is required, let’s discuss a different solution.

What is the difference between smart film, smart glass and permanent frosted film?

Smart film is a self-adhesive PDLC layer applied to suitable existing glass. Smart glass (switchable glass) has the PDLC layer as a laminated interlayer in a glass product and is installed as a glass unit; so it is not simply film on your current pane. Permanent frosted film needs no power or control, but always stays matte. For replacement or new builds, have the glass build-up and application specified in advance.
