Installing smart film yourself: step by step

Smart film from Privé Glas comes as a ready-to-install system: cut to size, with busbars fitted and fully tested. That is why you can install the film yourself with the manual and the installation video. This step-by-step guide shows how.

What is delivered?

Every kit is prepared to measure and tested before delivery. You receive:

  • the smart film, cut to the exact size;
  • professionally fitted busbars;
  • connection cables;
  • the Wi-Fi transformer, for control via the app and remote control;
  • a clear manual;
  • an installation video, available via QR code.

Step 1: measure correctly

A good installation starts with good measurements. Measure the width and height of the visible glass, from edge to edge, in millimetres. Measure in several places and note the smallest measurement each time. Measure each pane separately.

Send the measurements with a photo in your quote request. We check your dimensions and advise on the connection before the film is made.

Step 2: watch the video first

Take the time to read the manual and watch the whole installation video before you start. That way you know which steps are coming, which tools to have ready and what to pay extra attention to.

Never cut the film yourself. It contains an electrical circuit and is therefore supplied to the exact size.

Step 3: prepare the glass

Work on a clean pane in a dust-free environment. Follow the instructions in the manual and video for cleaning and preparing the glass. Also check in advance where the cable to the transformer will run and where the power socket is.

Step 4: apply the film

Apply the film following the manual and installation video. Work calmly and precisely, with the busbars on the side where the cable runs to the transformer. Keep the busbars and connections clear.

Step 5: finishing

For a neat finish the film can be sealed with a neutral silicone sealant suitable for glass. Do not use acetic (acetoxy) sealant, and make sure the sealant does not touch the busbar or the electrical connections.

Step 6: connect and pair the app

Connect the cables to the transformer and plug it into the power socket. Have the electrical connection made in line with the applicable regulations; if in doubt, call in an electrician.

Then pair the transformer with the app. From then on you switch the film via the app or remote control, and if you like via Google Home or Alexa. Without power the film is frosted; with power it turns clear.

The film costs €179 per m² excl. VAT, plus a one-time €149.99 excl. VAT for the transformer with Wi-Fi app. You get a 4-year warranty.
