Measuring your glass correctly for your quote

Published on · Privé Glas

Smart film is made to the exact size. That is why a good quote starts with good measurements. Measuring is not difficult if you follow a few rules. In this article you will read how to measure your glass correctly and what happens next.

Why accurate measuring matters

Smart film is not cut from a roll, but cut to the exact size of your pane, fitted with busbars and tested before delivery. You must not shorten the film yourself afterwards: it contains an electrical circuit. Correct measurements are therefore the basis of a good result.

What do you need?

Have these ready before you start:

  • a tape measure, preferably with millimetre markings;
  • pen and paper, or a note on your phone;
  • your phone to take photos.

Step 1: measure the visible glass

Measure the width and height of the visible glass, from edge to edge. That is the glass you actually see, inside the seals, beads or frame. Write the measurements down in millimetres, not centimetres.

Step 2: measure in several places

Windows, doors and frames are not always perfectly straight. So measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height on the left, middle and right. Note the smallest measurement each time.

Step 3: measure each pane separately

If you have several panes, even if they look identical, measure each one separately. On doors or windows with glazing bars or several glass panels, such as steel doors, each panel counts as a separate pane. Give each pane a name or number, for example "bathroom window" or "door 1, left panel".

Step 4: take a photo

Take a photo of every window or door so that the whole glass and the frame are visible. For a door it helps if the hinge side is visible too. Also show where the nearest power socket is: that is where the transformer goes.

Step 5: request your quote

Send the measurements, the photos and how you want to control it with your quote request. You will receive a free quote with the exact price. Smart film costs €179 per m² excl. VAT, plus a one-time €149.99 excl. VAT for the transformer with Wi-Fi app.

What happens next?

After your request, this is what happens:

  • We check your measurements and advise on the connection.
  • Once you agree, the film is cut to the exact size and the busbars are fitted.
  • The complete system is tested before delivery.
  • You receive the film with cables, a transformer with Wi-Fi app, a manual and an installation video.
  • You install it yourself, have your own installer fit it or choose installation by Privé Glas.

Having it installed

Privé Glas always comes to install, anywhere in Belgium and the Netherlands; for longer distances travel costs are added and shown in the quote. To install it yourself, read installing smart film yourself. Our premises are in Geleen; see also Sittard-Geleen, Antwerp and Brussels.

You get a 4-year warranty, and smart film is guaranteed to come off without residue.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is measuring in centimetres instead of millimetres, or noting the frame size instead of the visible glass. Another is taking a single measurement and assuming the window is the same width everywhere.

Unsure about a measurement? Note what you measured and mention your doubt in the request. With the photos, we can check your measurements before the film is made.
