Cleaning and maintaining smart film

Published on · Privé Glas

Smart film is low maintenance: with the right products and a gentle approach it stays nice and clear. In this article you will read what to use and avoid, how to clean step by step and why the manual matters for your warranty.

Why correct cleaning matters

Smart film is a switchable film with an electrical circuit and busbars at the edge. Correct cleaning maintains the clarity of the film. The wrong products can damage or dull it.

Important: damage due to incorrect cleaning or aggressive cleaners is not covered by the warranty. So always follow the instructions in the manual.

What can you use?

Allowed for cleaning:

  • a soft microfibre cloth;
  • lukewarm water;
  • a mild, non-abrasive cleaner;
  • glass cleaner without ammonia or alcohol.

What should you avoid?

Do not use:

  • abrasive sponges or cloths;
  • solvents such as acetone, thinner or turpentine;
  • alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners;
  • steam cleaners;
  • high-pressure cleaners.

Cleaning the film, step by step

Follow this simple method:

  • Turn off the smart film.
  • Lightly dampen a soft cloth.
  • Clean the surface without pressure.
  • Dry with a clean, dry cloth.

Points to watch

Do not clean directly over the busbars or electrical connections. Avoid excessive moisture at the edges and do not use sharp objects on the film, such as a scraper or knife.

A handy rule of thumb: regular light cleaning is better than occasional intensive scrubbing.

The result

Cleaned correctly, the film keeps a clear appearance, without streaks or dull spots. And your warranty stays valid: you get a 4-year warranty on smart film from Privé Glas, provided you use and maintain it according to the instructions.

Finishing and edges

During installation the film can be sealed with a neutral silicone sealant suitable for glass. Correct sealing protects against dust and gives a neat finish. Read more on the installation page and in our article installing smart film yourself.
