Smart film on a glass door
Published on · Privé Glas
Glass doors bring light into a home or office, but sometimes you want nobody to see through. With smart film, the glass in your door turns frosted or clear with one tap. In this article you will read what is possible, how to measure and what to consider for the connection.
Which glass doors?
Smart film is made to measure for the glass in your door. Typical examples:
- Glass interior doors, for example to a study, bathroom or bedroom.
- Sliding doors with glass between kitchen and living room or in an office.
- Steel doors with glass panels, often with several panes per door.
- Glass doors of meeting rooms, consulting rooms and offices.
How does it work on a door?
The film goes on the existing glass of the door. Without power it is frosted, with a milky-glass effect: light comes through, but the view is blurred. With power it turns clear, with 92% transparency.
You control the film via the app or the remote control. The Wi-Fi transformer also works with Google Home and Alexa.
On our projects page you can watch videos of smart film on doors switching from clear to frosted.
Measuring a glass door
Measure the width and height of the visible glass, from edge to edge, in millimetres. Measure in several places and note the smallest measurement each time. If your door has several panes, as many steel doors do, measure each pane separately.
Also send a photo of the whole door, including the hinge side. More tips in measuring your glass correctly for your quote.
The cable to the transformer
Smart film is powered by a cable to the transformer, which plugs into a power socket. With a fixed window that is simple; with a door that opens, the cable must be able to follow the door's movement.
That is why the cable usually runs via the hinge side of the door. Every door is different, so we advise on the cable route for your situation. Have the electrical connection made in line with the applicable regulations.
Sliding doors and steel doors
With sliding doors and steel doors with several glass panels, it is important to look carefully in advance at the construction, the movement of the door and the location of the socket. So please send clear photos. We look at the options and advise you in the quote.
What does smart film on a door cost?
Smart film costs €179 per m² excl. VAT, plus a one-time €149.99 excl. VAT for the transformer with Wi-Fi app. A door usually has a limited glass area. The film is made to measure, delivered tested and comes with a 4-year warranty.
Worked examples, including a glass interior door, are in what does smart film cost per m².
Installation
You can install it yourself with the manual and installation video (see installing smart film yourself), use your own installer or choose Privé Glas's certified installers. Privé Glas always comes to install, anywhere in Belgium and the Netherlands; for longer distances travel costs are added and shown in the quote.
Want the film off later? It is guaranteed to come off without residue. More information per region, for example for Ghent, Brussels and Eindhoven.
Uses at home and in the office
At home, smart film is often used on a glass door to the bathroom, study or bedroom. During the day light flows between the rooms, and when you want privacy you switch the door to frosted.
In offices it is usually about doors of meeting rooms, executive offices or consulting rooms. A glass door with smart film goes well with a glass wall that is also switchable, so the whole room turns frosted or clear at once.
